APR builds ECU software, turbo systems, intercoolers, exhausts, and chassis upgrades for VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, and Porsche platforms. Their range is engineered to OEM-plus tolerances: calibrations developed on a dyno and validated on track, not lifted from a generic map and sold as a tune.
With 510 products in this collection, the breadth can feel daunting. The guide below breaks APR's range into its major product families, explains which platform each line serves, and names five specific products worth starting with depending on your engine and build goals.
APR performance upgrades for Audi and VW: a practical buying guide
APR has been calibrating forced-induction European cars long enough that their name carries weight on its own. Founded in Alabama, they expanded into serious motorsport and OEM supply work before most UK tuners had heard of the VAG engine families APR now dominate. That track record matters because ECU calibrations are not interchangeable. A tune written for a specific engine family, running specific injectors, on a specific fuel grade, will outperform a generic remap every time. APR writes platform-specific tunes.
This guide covers the five families their products fall into, the platforms each one serves, and how to pick the right APR product for your build scope.
APR's product families
APR's 510-product catalogue is deep, but it clusters into five areas. Understanding which area your project falls into is the starting point.
ECU and TCU software
The core of what APR does. Power Packs are engine-specific ECU calibrations that raise boost targets, optimise ignition timing, and adjust fuel delivery within safe limits for a stock or mildly upgraded engine. Power Pack Pro versions go further, targeting hardware that has been upgraded (intercooler, intake, downpipe) and unlocking more aggressive calibration windows. TCU software works alongside ECU tunes to sharpen shift points and raise torque limits through the gearbox.
For most buyers starting out, an ECU Power Pack is the first purchase. It delivers measurable power gains without requiring any hardware changes.
Turbo systems
When ECU-only tuning hits its ceiling (typically the factory turbo's flow limit), APR offers complete turbo system kits. These are not bolt-on turbos from an unknown foundry. APR specifies and validates the entire system: turbo unit, inlet, outlet, hardware, and the matching ECU calibration. The Gen 4 LK2 kit for the 2.0T MQB platform is the clearest example: a complete package designed for builds targeting power that the factory turbo cannot support.
Intercoolers and thermal management
High-output forced-induction engines generate heat. APR's air-to-water intercooler systems address this at the hardware level, dropping charge temps and allowing the ECU calibration to maintain boost without pulling timing. On twin-turbo platforms like the B9 RS4 and RS5, thermal management is not optional for sustained track use.
Intakes and induction
APR's carbon fibre intake range and SAI breather filter kits improve airflow upstream of the turbo. On most platforms, an intake alone produces modest gains, but paired with a Power Pack Pro calibration it allows the ECU to take full advantage of the improved breathing. The SAI breather kit in particular addresses a known weak point on several VAG engines where the factory breather restricts airflow on high-demand runs.
Chassis and wheels
Less well known than their ECU range, APR also produces suspension hardware. The MQB AWD front anti-roll bar is a representative example: a direct replacement that reduces body roll without the ride quality compromise of adjustable aftermarket bars. APR's forged wheel range follows the same engineering standard: fitment-specific, not universal.
Platform matters: matching APR to your engine
APR's catalogue is organised by engine family, not by car model. This is worth understanding before you filter. A Golf R and an Audi S3 can share the same engine code (EA888.4 LK3) and therefore the same Power Pack. A B9 S4 and a B9 S5 share the EA839 3.0T and take the same software.
The major platforms APR covers in this collection:
- 2.0T EA888 MQB (Gen 3 and Gen 4, LK2 and LK3 variants): Golf GTI, Golf R, Audi TT, Audi S3, Leon Cupra. The highest-volume APR platform in the UK.
- 2.5T EA855 EVO: Audi TT RS, RS3. A five-cylinder engine with a strong following.
- 3.0T EA839 B9: Audi S4, S5, SQ5, and variants. Twin-scroll single turbo, very tuner-friendly architecture.
- Porsche 992 3.0T: 911 Carrera and variants. APR's Porsche software is a more recent expansion of their European range.
Start by confirming your engine code before ordering. The platform sub-sets are specific. An EA888.3 Power Pack will not function correctly on an EA888.4.
Which APR product to buy: a decision framework
Three questions determine where in APR's range you should be looking.
What is your power target, and how do you intend to use the car? A daily driver that occasionally sees a track day is a different brief from a car stripped for circuit use. APR's Power Pack sits at one end of that spectrum; their complete turbo systems sit at the other.
Is the engine stock, or have you already upgraded hardware? If the engine is stock, a Power Pack is the correct starting point. If you have fitted a performance intercooler, downpipe, or intake, a Power Pack Pro unlocks the calibration advantage those parts create. If you are running a replacement turbo, you need a turbo-specific tune from APR, not a Power Pack.
What is your budget for the full project? ECU software alone is the lowest-cost entry point. Adding hardware (intercooler, intake, exhaust) alongside the software raises the project cost but also the ceiling. APR's turbo kit route is a significant investment; treat it as a complete build commitment rather than a single purchase.
Top picks across APR's range
APR Power Pack for the 2.0T EA888.4 LK3 (MQB)
The most common starting point for Golf R and Audi S3 owners. This is APR's ECU software calibration for the Gen 4 EA888.4 LK3 engine in its stock configuration. No hardware changes required. The calibration raises boost and optimises fuelling within the factory engine's tolerances. If you have a 2.0T MQB car and have not tuned it yet, this is where you begin. Not the right choice if you have already fitted a performance intercooler or downpipe: step up to the Power Pack Pro instead.
APR Power Pack for the 3.0T EA839 B9 (S4/S5)
For Audi B9 S4 and S5 owners who want meaningful power from the factory 3.0T without replacing the turbo. The EA839 responds well to calibration work and APR's software for this platform has a long development history. A good choice for a car that spends most of its time on the road with occasional track outings. If you are planning a full turbo upgrade on a B9, speak to APR about their turbo-specific calibration options before ordering the standard Power Pack.
APR Turbo System Kit for the 2.0T Gen 4 LK2 (with LK3 adapters)
For 2.0T MQB builds where a Power Pack is no longer the ceiling. This is a complete turbo system, not a universal bolt-on. APR specifies the full package including the matching ECU calibration. The LK3 adapter compatibility means it covers both the Golf R (LK3) and GTI (LK2) platforms within a single kit. Buy this when you have already tuned the stock turbo and want to push further. It is not an entry-level purchase and expects supporting hardware (fuelling, intercooling) to be in place.
APR Air-to-Water Intercooler System for the B9 RS4/RS5 2.9T
The B9 RS4 and RS5 run a twin-turbo 2.9T V6. Under sustained load, charge temperatures rise and the ECU pulls timing to protect the engine. APR's air-to-water intercooler system is a direct replacement designed to address this. If you are running an APR Power Pack Pro on an RS4 or RS5 and plan to use the car on circuit, the intercooler is the hardware upgrade that allows the calibration to do its job consistently. Not required for light road use on a standard Power Pack, but worth considering for any build targeting sustained performance.
APR Ultralink: at-home flashing and tune management
The Ultralink is APR's remote calibration and tune management tool. It allows the user to flash new APR software, switch between multiple tunes (for different fuel grades or build configurations), and receive over-the-air calibration updates from APR. Useful for anyone managing an APR-tuned car without regular dealer or workshop access, and particularly relevant if you are running multiple APR maps (for example, a 98-octane street tune and a separate E85-blend calibration). It is also the product that connects the buyer to APR's ongoing software development, which matters when APR releases refinements to an existing platform's calibration.
Frequently asked questions
Which APR Power Pack is right for my engine?
APR's Power Pack range is organised by engine code, not by car model. Start by identifying your engine family: common ones include the 2.0T EA888.3 (older MQB cars), 2.0T EA888.4 LK2 or LK3 (GTI and Golf R from 2018 onwards), 2.5T EA855 EVO (TT RS, RS3), and 3.0T EA839 (B9 S4, S5, SQ5). Filter by engine code rather than car name to find the correct product. If you are unsure which generation EA888 you have, your car's build date and VIN decoder will confirm it.
Is APR tuning safe on a stock engine?
APR's Power Pack calibrations are developed to run on stock hardware. They raise boost and optimise fuelling and ignition timing within the margins the factory engine is built to handle. APR's reputation is built on calibrations that hold up over time, not maximum power at the expense of longevity. That said, tuning any engine increases the load it runs under. Maintaining service intervals, running the correct fuel grade specified for your APR calibration, and addressing any existing faults before flashing are the conditions under which APR's safety claims apply.
Do I need an intercooler or exhaust alongside an APR tune?
For a Power Pack on a stock engine: no, not immediately. The Power Pack is designed to run on standard hardware. Where hardware upgrades become relevant is when you move to a Power Pack Pro calibration, which targets an engine already fitted with an upgraded intercooler, intake, or downpipe and is calibrated to take advantage of those improvements. If you are fitting a Power Pack and later add hardware, revisit the calibration tier at that point rather than upgrading hardware and staying on a Power Pack.
Will APR tuning void my manufacturer warranty?
In the UK, ECU modifications can give a manufacturer or dealer grounds to decline warranty claims related to the powertrain. APR tuning is detectable by the dealer network. Whether a specific warranty claim is declined depends on the manufacturer, the dealer, and whether the modification is causally linked to the fault. This is a decision each owner makes for themselves. APR does not claim their software preserves manufacturer warranty, and any retailer who says otherwise is overstating the position.
What is the difference between APR Power Pack and Power Pack Pro?
The Power Pack is calibrated for a stock engine with no hardware modifications. The Power Pack Pro is calibrated for an engine running upgraded hardware, typically an aftermarket intercooler, intake, and performance downpipe at minimum. The Pro calibration takes advantage of the improved airflow and cooling those parts provide to push further into the engine's potential. Running a Power Pack Pro on a completely stock engine is not the intended use and will not produce the results the calibration was developed for.
Can I run multiple APR calibrations on the same car?
Yes, if you are using the APR Ultralink tool. The Ultralink supports multiple stored maps and allows switching between them. A common setup for a dual-use car is a 98 RON street calibration and a separate map for higher-octane or E85-blend fuel at a track day. APR issues calibration updates periodically for established platforms; the Ultralink also handles those over-the-air without a workshop visit.
What power gains does APR tuning typically deliver?
This varies by platform and cannot be quoted as a single figure across APR's range. The gains depend on the engine, the baseline output, the tune tier, and the supporting hardware. Rather than quoting a number here, look at APR's published dyno data for your specific engine family on their website, which gives before-and-after figures for each platform and tune tier. Those numbers represent controlled dyno conditions and real-world results will vary with fuel quality, ambient temperature, and vehicle condition. [VERIFY: specific power gain figures by platform are not confirmed in available vault context and should be sourced from APR's published dyno data before adding to this copy.]
