Water / Methanol Injection
Water / Methanol Injection — Charge Cooling and Detonation Control
Water/methanol injection is one of the most effective tools available for managing intake charge temperatures and detonation risk on boosted performance engines. By injecting a fine mist of water and methanol into the intake stream ahead of the intercooler or directly into the intake manifold, charge temperatures are dramatically reduced — methanol's high latent heat of vaporisation absorbs heat energy as it evaporates, producing charge cooling that a charge air cooler alone cannot match. The result is denser intake charge, reduced detonation risk, and the ability to safely run higher boost levels or more aggressive timing than would be possible without the system.
Our water/methanol injection range from Holley EFI provides complete injection system components including injection modules, pumps, and mounting hardware — the building blocks of an effective detonation management system for boosted applications running on pump fuel or ethanol blends.
When Water/Methanol Makes Sense
Water/methanol injection is particularly valuable in applications where a full intercooler installation isn't practical, where ambient temperatures limit intercooler effectiveness, or where maximum power from a given turbocharger or supercharger setup requires charge temperatures below what a conventional air-to-air intercooler can deliver. On compressed natural gas and high-ethanol blends, water/methanol provides additional octane support that allows the engine management system to run more aggressive timing maps for improved power output.
The system is also an effective safety backstop on track day and competition vehicles — if boost creep or unexpected detonation occurs during hard use, a correctly configured water/methanol system provides real-time protection that a conventional tune-and-hope approach cannot match.
