Defender LS3 conversion overview

Converting a Land Rover Defender Puma to LS3 power is not simply an engine swap. A proper conversion involves powertrain packaging, transmission control, LT230 transfer case alignment, right-hand drive clearance, fuel system conversion, cooling capacity, exhaust routing, instrumentation, wiring, calibration and long-term serviceability.

This complete Defender LS3 conversion kit is designed around the Chevrolet Performance LS3 6.2-litre V8, GM 6L80E six-speed automatic transmission and the original Land Rover LT230 transfer case. The aim is to give Defender 90 and 110 Puma owners a defined, technically coherent route into a modern petrol V8 conversion without treating every part of the build as a one-off fabrication problem.

The kit has been specified for UK right-hand drive Defenders, where steering column position, pedal box clearance, manifold routing, bulkhead space and transmission location all matter. Many LS swap components are developed around left-hand drive vehicles, which can create expensive problems when adapted to a UK Defender. This package is built to reduce that uncertainty.

The result is a conversion route suited to high-quality road, touring, towing, off-road and bespoke Defender builds where reliability, drivability and known component compatibility matter as much as peak power.

What is included in the Defender LS3 conversion kit?

The complete Defender LS3 conversion kit is built around nine matched packages covering the major systems required for a professional LS3 and 6L80E installation. These include the engine, automatic transmission, LT230 adaptor system, mounts, engine management, instrumentation, fuel system, cooling system, exhaust interface, shifter and accessory drive components.

Each package can be purchased individually through the kit builder below, but the full bundle is intended for builds where the major systems need to work together from the outset. This helps avoid the usual problem with LS Defender conversions: buying a drivetrain, then discovering that wiring, mounts, fuel pressure, gearbox control, cooling, dash integration and clearance still need solving separately.

Not included: Exhaust system beyond the supplied manifolds, which is normally fabricated to suit the vehicle, propshaft length adjustment and cooling fan/shroud selection. See the FAQ for typical costs and installation notes.

How much does a Defender LS3 conversion cost?

The parts cost for the complete LS3 and 6L80E Defender Puma conversion starts from £27,715 including VAT at the 430 bhp engine specification. Higher-output LS3 options are available at 495 bhp and 525 bhp. These figures cover the major supplied components in the kit, including the engine, transmission, adaptor system, mounts, electronics, dash integration, fuel system, cooling package, exhaust interface, controls and ancillaries.

Installation labour is not included because workshop rates, fabrication scope and vehicle condition vary. A professional installation should also allow for exhaust fabrication beyond the supplied manifolds, propshaft length adjustment, cooling fan and shroud selection, final calibration checks and any vehicle-specific refurbishment discovered during the build.

When comparing this kit with a cheaper LS swap route, the important difference is scope. A lower initial parts bill may still require separate sourcing of engine management, gearbox control, adaptor hardware, mounts, fuel plumbing, cooling, instrumentation, exhaust clearance parts and technical support. This package is intended to give the project a clearer total parts scope before the vehicle comes apart.

What Defender models does this LS3 conversion kit fit?

This kit is designed for Land Rover Defender 90 and Defender 110 Puma models produced from 2007 to 2016 with the 2.4 TDCi or 2.2 TDCi engine. It is specified around UK right-hand drive vehicles and is designed to retain the Land Rover LT230 transfer case, permanent four-wheel drive and the core Defender driveline layout.

Earlier Td5 and 300Tdi Defenders may be possible using the same core LS3 and 6L80E powertrain logic, but supporting components can differ. Defender 130 builds may also require additional consideration around vehicle use, weight, propshaft configuration and installation scope.

Defender 90 Puma

Suitable for 2007 to 2016 Defender 90 Puma models using the 2.4 TDCi or 2.2 TDCi engine.

Defender 110 Puma

Suitable for 2007 to 2016 Defender 110 Puma models where the build requires LS3 V8 power, 6L80E automatic transmission and LT230 retention.

UK right-hand drive

Specified around right-hand drive steering column, pedal box, bulkhead and exhaust packaging requirements.

LT230 retained

Designed to retain the LT230 transfer case, permanent four-wheel drive and familiar Defender driveline behaviour.

Build your Defender LS3 conversion kit

The complete LS3 Defender conversion is divided into matched packages so owners and workshops can either purchase the full kit or select the systems they need. For a full Defender 90 or 110 Puma LS3 conversion, the complete bundle is recommended because it keeps the engine, gearbox, LT230 adaptor system, wiring, fuel system, cooling package, instruments and supporting components aligned from the start.

Where a vehicle specification changes the exact requirement, such as wheel and tyre size, axle ratio, cooling fan choice, propshaft length or air conditioning layout, we confirm the correct configuration at order stage.

Choosing the right Defender LS conversion route

A Defender LS conversion can be approached in several ways. Some builders start with an engine and gearbox, then source adaptor parts, mounts, wiring, cooling, fuel components and instrumentation separately. Others use a basic adaptor package and fabricate the remaining systems around it.

That approach can work for experienced fabricators, but it often leaves the most important questions unresolved until the vehicle is already apart. Will the transfer case sit correctly? Will the exhaust clear the steering shaft? Is the fuel system correctly regulated for LS EFI? How will the 6L80E be controlled? How will the dashboard read engine data? What is still missing?

Billy's Speed Shop has structured this package to answer those questions before the build starts. The kit defines the major systems, supplies compatible components and gives UK owners and workshops a clearer route into an LS3-powered Defender without treating every installation as a blank sheet.

Defender LS3 conversion FAQs

How much does the complete LS3 Defender conversion kit cost?

At the 430 bhp engine specification, the complete kit totals approximately £27,715 including VAT when every package is added. Upgrading to the 495 bhp LS3 brings the total to around £28,080, and the 525 bhp option to £29,076. These are parts-only figures, installation labour is additional and varies by workshop. The kit can also be purchased as individual packages from the builder section above if you already have some components.

Is this a complete LS3 Defender conversion kit?

Yes. This kit supplies the complete powertrain and all major supporting systems required for a professional LS3 and 6L80 conversion in a Defender 90 or 110 Puma. The only items not included are the exhaust system beyond the supplied manifolds (normally fabricated to suit the specific vehicle), propshaft modification where required, and the electric cooling fan and shroud, which is typically specified to the individual build.

Is the kit supplied as a complete bundle or modular packages?

Both options are supported. You can purchase the complete bundle in one transaction, or use the kit builder above to add individual packages to your basket based on the systems you need. Purchasing the complete bundle is recommended where possible because it guarantees compatible part selection across the whole conversion.

What Defender models does this LS3 conversion kit fit?

This kit is engineered for Defender 90 and 110 Puma models fitted with the 2.2 TDCi or 2.4 TDCi engine, covering the 2007 to 2016 production years. It retains the LT230 transfer case and full permanent four-wheel drive. For earlier Defenders (Td5, 300Tdi), or 130 models, contact us, the core powertrain components are compatible but some supporting items differ.

Does this kit retain the LT230 transfer case?

Yes. The adaptor system is engineered to retain the LT230, preserving full 4×4 functionality, centre diff lock, and familiar Defender driveline behaviour. This is a key design choice, many LS swap kits relocate the transfer case or substitute an alternative, which affects driveline geometry and off-road capability.

Is this suitable for UK right-hand drive Defenders?

Yes. This kit is engineered specifically for UK right-hand drive vehicles. The adaptor system, engine mounting, and exhaust manifold clearance are packaged around the RHD steering column, pedal box, and bulkhead geometry, avoiding the interference issues common when adapting LHD-focused conversion kits to UK vehicles.

Do I need propshaft modifications?

Most installations require front and rear propshaft length adjustment to suit the final driveline position with the 6L80 fitted. This is typically handled by a propshaft specialist during install, allow approximately £300 to £500 for the work. Some vehicles may require driveline angle correction shims at the axle ends.

Can I retain air conditioning?

Yes. The Ancillaries and Accessory Drive package includes a Sanden-compatible A/C compressor bracket on the Holley accessory drive. Retaining the factory Defender A/C system requires re-routing of the high and low pressure hoses to the new compressor location, which is a vehicle-specific fabrication task rather than a kit component.

How long does a full LS3 Defender conversion take to install?

A competent workshop typically books 120 to 150 hours of shop time for the mechanical installation, plus a separate day for final calibration, road testing, and sign-off. Private builds working evenings and weekends usually run 8 to 12 weeks of elapsed time depending on fabrication scope (particularly exhaust) and how much preparation work, such as chassis cleaning or ancillary refurbishment, is carried out alongside the swap.

Can this be installed by a workshop or as a private build?

Both are supported. The kit is designed with defined component interfaces that work equally well for professional workshop installations and for experienced private builders working with appropriate facilities. We provide installation guidance, component identification, and remote technical support throughout the build. If you would prefer a managed install, we can suggest UK workshops who have completed this conversion previously.

What specialist tools are required for the installation?

Standard workshop tooling covers most of the installation. The specific items worth confirming before you begin are: a 2-tonne engine crane with tilting load leveller, suitable transmission jack rated for the 6L80's weight, AN fitting spanners, a flaring tool for the fuel hardlines, and a diagnostic interface capable of reading GM GMLAN for post-install calibration checks.

Do I need to notify DVLA about the engine change?

Yes. Any engine change on a UK-registered vehicle must be notified to DVLA. The V5C section 2 must be updated with the new engine number, cylinder capacity (6,162 cc for the LS3), and fuel type change from diesel to petrol. The vehicle retains its original registration and tax class provided the change is declared correctly. An IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) test is not required for an engine swap on a vehicle that retains its original chassis and identity, but a fresh MOT is required before the vehicle returns to the road.

Will the converted Defender pass a UK MOT?

Yes, assuming the installation is to a reasonable standard. The LS3 is a closed-loop EFI engine with oxygen sensors, so it meets the emissions standards applied to petrol vehicles of the Defender's original registration year. The most common MOT failure points on conversions are exhaust leaks at hand-fabricated sections, insufficient fuel line clamping, and missing warning lamps on the dash, all preventable during build.

How do I insure an LS3-converted Defender?

Specialist modified vehicle insurers cover LS-converted Defenders routinely. Adrian Flux, A-Plan, Heritage, and Lancaster all write policies for this type of build. You will need to declare the engine change, power output, and any associated brake and suspension upgrades. Typical annual premiums range from £500 to £1,200 depending on driver profile, mileage, and security specification, broadly comparable to or slightly higher than the equivalent diesel Defender.

What fuel economy should I expect from an LS3 Defender?

Real-world figures from completed UK builds typically fall in the range of 18 to 22 mpg on a mixed run, 22 to 25 mpg steady motorway cruising, and 12 to 15 mpg heavy off-road or towing. These are meaningfully lower than the Puma diesel, but the 6L80's 0.67 sixth gear overdrive keeps motorway rpm around 1,750 at 70 mph with a 3.54 axle and 265/75R16 tyres, which is a major improvement over the factory five-speed's cruise behaviour.

What's the towing capacity after the conversion?

The Defender's chassis, axles, and braking system set the towing limit, not the powertrain. The factory 3,500 kg braked towing capacity is preserved. The LS3's torque curve makes the vehicle significantly more comfortable towing at motorway speeds on gradients than the factory diesel, and the 6L80's adaptive shift strategy maintains appropriate gear selection under sustained load.

Is the LS3 engine reliable for daily use?

The LS3 is a production Chevrolet Performance crate engine shared with the C6 Corvette and fifth-generation Camaro SS. In OEM service it routinely exceeds 200,000 miles. Parts availability through GM and the aftermarket is excellent worldwide, servicing is straightforward, and the engine carries a Chevrolet Performance warranty from new. For a Defender, which spends most of its life below 80% of the LS3's rated output, service life is effectively indefinite with routine maintenance.

What support do you provide after purchase?

Remote technical support is provided for the lifetime of the installation. This covers component identification, installation guidance, wiring queries, and calibration advice. Where specific questions arise during the build, we are reachable by phone and email during UK business hours. Warranty on supplied components follows the original manufacturer's terms, Chevrolet Performance, Holley, Dakota Digital, Lokar, and Hooker all provide their own warranties, which we assist with if claims arise.
