Cold Air Intakes & Performance Air Filters
Unrestricted, cool, dense air is the most basic ingredient of engine power — and a quality air intake system is one of the simplest and most cost-effective upgrades available to any performance engine. Every cubic foot of air the engine breathes must pass through the air filter and intake system before reaching the carburettor or throttle body. Restriction and heat in this path directly reduces the mass of air entering the engine, limiting both power and efficiency.
With 166 intake and filtration products in our range, Billy's Speed Shop stocks a comprehensive selection of air cleaner assemblies, cold air intake kits, high-flow air filters, and associated components for carburetted and EFI applications across American performance and restoration builds.
Cold Air Intake Kits — Temperature and Flow
A cold air intake kit relocates the air filter to a position where it draws cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay rather than the hot air that accumulates around the engine during normal operation. Cooler air is denser air — it contains more oxygen molecules per unit volume, which allows the engine management system to add more fuel and produce more power for the same displacement. On a hot day with a standard setup, engine bay temperatures can be 20–30°C above ambient, representing a meaningful power deficit that a cold air intake can partially recover.
Performance Air Cleaner Assemblies for Carburetted Engines
For carburetted applications, the air cleaner assembly is both a functional filter housing and a significant visual element of the engine bay. Chrome, raw aluminium, and powder-coated finishes in round, oval, and custom profiles allow the right air cleaner to complement the overall build aesthetic while ensuring the engine breathes freely. Our air cleaner range includes both traditional open-element assemblies and closed designs that can connect to cold air ducting for improved intake temperature management on street-driven carburetted builds.
High-Flow Replacement Air Filters
Replacement high-flow air filters are one of the most straightforward performance upgrades available — fitting in the same location as the original filter but flowing significantly more air with less restriction. Quality high-flow filters use oiled cotton gauze media that provides better filtration than paper while flowing more freely, and are washable and reusable rather than disposable, making them a long-term economy as well as a performance upgrade.
Velocity Stacks and Intake Scoops
Velocity stacks — the trumpet-shaped intake openings used on individual throttle body and carburetted racing applications — smooth the airflow entry into each carburettor or throttle body and can meaningfully improve top-end power by reducing inlet losses. Intake scoops for bonnet applications allow the fitment of functional ram air systems on suitable body styles, providing a small but real benefit from the forward motion of the vehicle at speed.
