The right pad compound delivers strong initial bite, consistent pedal feel through the operating temperature range, and controlled dust and noise levels appropriate to the intended use. The wrong pad — whether too aggressive for street use or too mild for track use — compromises both performance and the experience of using the brakes.

Street Performance Pad Compounds

Street performance brake pads deliver improved initial bite and better sustained performance under moderate repeated use compared to standard OEM-specification pads. They're appropriate for the daily-driven performance car or classic vehicle that occasionally sees spirited driving, where the improved performance over standard pads is valuable but the aggressive characteristics of full race compounds — higher operating temperatures, more dust, and cold bite limitations — would be a daily nuisance.

Track and Competition Pad Compounds

Track-specification pad compounds are designed to operate at the elevated temperatures generated by sustained hard braking — the kind of braking experienced in circuit racing, hillclimb, and intensive track day use where every braking zone involves heavy deceleration from high speed. These compounds reach their optimal friction characteristics at temperatures that would cause a street pad to fade or glaze, providing consistent, fade-resistant performance through an entire track session. The trade-off for this high-temperature performance is reduced effectiveness when cold — track pads need a warm-up lap or two before they provide their full friction coefficient.

Drum Brake Shoes

For vehicles retaining drum brakes at the rear — a common configuration on classic trucks and muscle cars where a rear drum conversion isn't planned — quality replacement drum shoes maintain correct braking balance and provide reliable stopping performance for road use. Correct shoe specification ensures proper contact with the drum surface and appropriate friction characteristics for the vehicle weight and drum diameter.
