Performance Exhaust Systems, Y-Pipes & X-Pipes
A complete cat-back or axle-back exhaust system is the finishing touch on any performance exhaust installation — delivering the sound character and reduced back-pressure that complete the package begun by quality headers or manifolds. The exhaust system from the catalytic converter back has less effect on power than the headers, but its contribution to overall exhaust tone, back-pressure reduction, and the aesthetic presentation of the vehicle is significant enough to make it a priority upgrade for any serious build.
With 494 exhaust system products from Flowmaster, Hooker, Flowmonster, and Hooker Blackheart, our exhaust system range covers complete cat-back and axle-back systems, pipes, X-pipes, and Y-pipes for the most popular American performance vehicle applications.
Cat-Back Exhaust Systems — Complete Solutions
A cat-back exhaust system replaces everything from the catalytic converter back to the exhaust tips — typically including the connecting pipes, resonator, muffler, and tips in a matched set designed to work together as a system. The advantage of a complete system over individual components is that the pipe diameters, bend radii, and component specifications are engineered together for consistent flow and sound character — producing a result that's more predictable than mixing components from different manufacturers.
X-Pipes and H-Pipes — Crossover Flow
On V8 engines with dual exhaust systems, an X-pipe or H-pipe connecting the two banks balances exhaust pulses between them and reduces back-pressure. The X-pipe design produces a smoother, higher-pitched sound character and marginally better flow; the H-pipe produces a deeper, more traditional V8 exhaust note while still reducing back-pressure compared to no crossover at all. Both designs can produce measurable power improvements on well-tuned exhaust systems, and the choice between them is partly a power consideration and partly a sound preference.
Individual Exhaust Pipes for Custom Installations
Individual exhaust pipes in mandrel-bent configurations allow the construction of custom exhaust systems around specific routing requirements — essential on engine swap builds and custom vehicles where no off-the-shelf system exists. Mandrel bending maintains consistent internal diameter through bends, preserving the flow characteristics of straight-pipe sections through the curves required by any practical routing.
