Beyond the basic spark delivery components lies the control and triggering architecture that determines when and how the ignition system fires. Ignition control modules, crank trigger systems, and dedicated ignition wiring harnesses are the engineering behind precise timing delivery in performance applications — particularly relevant when an external ignition control box replaces or supplements factory timing management, or when a crank trigger system provides the timing reference accuracy that cam position sensors and distributor pickups cannot match at high RPM.
With 96 products from MSD, Holley EFI, and Brothers Trucks, our ignition control range supports traditional SBC and BBC distributorless and distributor-based performance ignition systems alongside modern LS applications requiring precision triggering for high-power configurations.
Ignition Control Modules
An external ignition control box — the traditional performance ignition solution for SBC and BBC applications — processes the trigger signal from the distributor pickup and generates a high-energy spark output with controlled duration and precise timing. These systems provide higher spark energy than the stock ignition system, allowing reliable combustion under the marginal conditions of high compression, boost, and lean mixtures that challenge standard ignition components. Advanced features like multiple-spark discharge at low RPM improve idle quality and part-throttle combustion efficiency on modified engines.
Crank Trigger Systems — Ultimate Timing Precision
Crank trigger systems attach a precision trigger wheel directly to the crankshaft harmonic balancer, providing a trigger signal that's directly and accurately related to crankshaft position — the thing that actually matters for ignition timing. Compared to distributor-based triggering, which introduces backlash, wear, and mechanical imprecision into the timing signal, a crank trigger produces timing accuracy at high RPM that distributors simply cannot match. For race engines running high compression or aggressive timing curves, the timing precision a crank trigger delivers translates directly to consistent power output and reduced risk of detonation from timing variations.
Ignition Wiring and Harnesses
Quality ignition system wiring — correctly rated for voltage, properly shielded against interference, and with quality terminals at every connection — is the infrastructure on which the entire ignition system depends. A poor connection in the ignition circuit causes voltage drops that reduce spark energy; unshielded wiring in proximity to sensitive electronics causes radio frequency interference that disrupts other vehicle systems.
