The Defender LS swap market divides into three types of supplier. Each has a different scope, which determines how much additional work and component sourcing a builder takes on.
| Approach | Scope | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| US workshop-kit suppliers e.g. Zero2Sixty, RW Performance, Legends Global |
Adaptor, mounts, fuel pump, radiator. Engine and transmission sourced separately. LHD-focused packaging. | US and export builders with existing LS drivetrain and in-house fabrication. |
| Bolt-on adaptor manufacturers e.g. Marks 4WD, Marsland Chassis |
Adaptor plates and bellhousing interfaces only. Every other system is the builder's responsibility. | Specialist fabricators building one-off vehicles. |
| Billy's complete conversion kit | All nine systems, UK right-hand drive engineered, stock held in the UK (engine from US partner, duties inclusive). | UK owners and workshops who want defined scope, known total cost, and a single technical contact. |
The LS3 and 6L80 conversion makes most sense for Defender 90 and 110 Puma owners who want automatic drivability, modern refinement, and long service life without sacrificing off-road capability or the vehicle's usability. It is commonly specified where the factory 2.2 or 2.4 TDCi no longer meets expectations for towing, reliability, or long-distance comfort.
It is the wrong choice if the primary goal is maximum originality, if running cost is the dominant concern (diesel will remain cheaper to fuel), or if the build budget does not accommodate the parts total plus workshop labour. In those cases, a Puma engine rebuild or a lower-output LS alternative may suit better.
This conversion is supplied as a defined, complete LS3 Defender installation kit. Every major system is matched and supplied to work together in a UK Defender chassis. Use the packages below to add individual blocks to your basket, or purchase the complete bundle. Where Defender specification changes the exact requirement, we identify and supply the correct variant at order stage.

The Chevrolet Performance LS3 is a factory-fresh 6.2-litre aluminium V8 producing 430 bhp and 576 Nm. Compact dimensions fit the Defender bay cleanly, and the lightweight block reduces front axle load compared with cast-iron alternatives.
Upgrade options: 495 bhp and 525 bhp LS3 variants available with identical fitment.
The GM 6L80 is an electronically controlled six-speed automatic with adaptive shift strategy, wide ratio spread, and twin overdrive gears. It delivers refined on-road behaviour and improved efficiency compared with older automatic conversions. Included in the Drivetrain Integration Package along with the converter and UK adaptor system.
With correct calibration, the shift feel is controlled and predictable — town, lanes, and long motorway runs.
The adaptor system aligns the GM powertrain with the Defender drivetrain so the LT230 remains in the correct location and driveline angles stay within spec. Most readily available kits are designed for LHD vehicles and cause steering column and header clearance issues on UK builds. This solution is engineered specifically for right-hand drive packaging.
A genuine Chevrolet Performance Connect and Cruise controller kit manages fuel, spark, and drivetrain control for both the engine and 6L80. Paired with a Dakota Digital HDX cluster and CAN interface, the Defender receives accurate modern instrumentation without extensive sensor duplication.
Each of these packages is engineered to integrate cleanly with the LS3 and 6L80 powertrain in a UK Defender chassis. Click the relevant builder card above to add individual packages to your basket.
High-capacity Defender V8 radiator with conversion hose routing and heater integration. Built for slow off-road work, towing, and long-distance road use.
Electric fan and shroud solutions specified separately, controlled by LS3 ECU fan output.
This is one of the most comprehensive packages in the kit. It replaces the entire Puma diesel fuel and air system with a purpose-built EFI petrol setup — from the air filter to the fuel rail, with every hose, fitting, filter, and adapter included. Nothing left to source.
Hooker BlackHeart LS swap manifolds in natural cast finish. Compact block hugger profile provides clearance of chassis rails, footwells, and RHD steering shaft. Foundation for custom stainless fabrication.
Lokar electronic sport shifter designed to look correct within a Defender cabin. Gated layout with precise mechanical engagement and heavy-duty cable linkage.
Holley complete accessory drive system with A/C compressor provision, establishing reliable alternator and power steering operation packaged to avoid bonnet and inner wing interference.
This complete LS3 and 6L80 package is engineered for a wide range of Defender owners and specialists across the UK. Whether the project is a daily-driven 90, a long-wheelbase 110 tourer, or a high-value bespoke commission, the system is designed for predictable, professional integration.

At the 430 bhp engine specification, the complete kit totals approximately £27,715 including VAT when every package is added. Upgrading to the 495 bhp LS3 brings the total to around £28,080, and the 525 bhp option to £29,076. These are parts-only figures — installation labour is additional and varies by workshop. The kit can also be purchased as individual packages from the builder section above if you already have some components.
Yes. This kit supplies the complete powertrain and all major supporting systems required for a professional LS3 and 6L80 conversion in a Defender 90 or 110 Puma. The only items not included are the exhaust system beyond the supplied manifolds (normally fabricated to suit the specific vehicle), propshaft modification where required, and the electric cooling fan and shroud, which is typically specified to the individual build.
Both options are supported. You can purchase the complete bundle in one transaction, or use the kit builder above to add individual packages to your basket based on the systems you need. Purchasing the complete bundle is recommended where possible because it guarantees compatible part selection across the whole conversion.
This kit is engineered for Defender 90 and 110 Puma models fitted with the 2.2 TDCi or 2.4 TDCi engine, covering the 2007 to 2016 production years. It retains the LT230 transfer case and full permanent four-wheel drive. For earlier Defenders (Td5, 300Tdi), or 130 models, contact us — the core powertrain components are compatible but some supporting items differ.
Yes. The adaptor system is engineered to retain the LT230, preserving full 4×4 functionality, centre diff lock, and familiar Defender driveline behaviour. This is a key design choice — many LS swap kits relocate the transfer case or substitute an alternative, which affects driveline geometry and off-road capability.
Yes. This kit is engineered specifically for UK right-hand drive vehicles. The adaptor system, engine mounting, and exhaust manifold clearance are packaged around the RHD steering column, pedal box, and bulkhead geometry, avoiding the interference issues common when adapting LHD-focused conversion kits to UK vehicles.
Most installations require front and rear propshaft length adjustment to suit the final driveline position with the 6L80 fitted. This is typically handled by a propshaft specialist during install — allow approximately £300 to £500 for the work. Some vehicles may require driveline angle correction shims at the axle ends.
Yes. The Ancillaries and Accessory Drive package includes a Sanden-compatible A/C compressor bracket on the Holley accessory drive. Retaining the factory Defender A/C system requires re-routing of the high and low pressure hoses to the new compressor location, which is a vehicle-specific fabrication task rather than a kit component.
A competent workshop typically books 120 to 150 hours of shop time for the mechanical installation, plus a separate day for final calibration, road testing, and sign-off. Private builds working evenings and weekends usually run 8 to 12 weeks of elapsed time depending on fabrication scope (particularly exhaust) and how much preparation work — such as chassis cleaning or ancillary refurbishment — is carried out alongside the swap.
Both are supported. The kit is designed with defined component interfaces that work equally well for professional workshop installations and for experienced private builders working with appropriate facilities. We provide installation guidance, component identification, and remote technical support throughout the build. If you would prefer a managed install, we can suggest UK workshops who have completed this conversion previously.
Standard workshop tooling covers most of the installation. The specific items worth confirming before you begin are: a 2-tonne engine crane with tilting load leveller, suitable transmission jack rated for the 6L80's weight, AN fitting spanners, a flaring tool for the fuel hardlines, and a diagnostic interface capable of reading GM GMLAN for post-install calibration checks.
Yes. Any engine change on a UK-registered vehicle must be notified to DVLA. The V5C section 2 must be updated with the new engine number, cylinder capacity (6,162 cc for the LS3), and fuel type change from diesel to petrol. The vehicle retains its original registration and tax class provided the change is declared correctly. An IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) test is not required for an engine swap on a vehicle that retains its original chassis and identity, but a fresh MOT is required before the vehicle returns to the road.
Yes, assuming the installation is to a reasonable standard. The LS3 is a closed-loop EFI engine with oxygen sensors, so it meets the emissions standards applied to petrol vehicles of the Defender's original registration year. The most common MOT failure points on conversions are exhaust leaks at hand-fabricated sections, insufficient fuel line clamping, and missing warning lamps on the dash — all preventable during build.
Specialist modified vehicle insurers cover LS-converted Defenders routinely. Adrian Flux, A-Plan, Heritage, and Lancaster all write policies for this type of build. You will need to declare the engine change, power output, and any associated brake and suspension upgrades. Typical annual premiums range from £500 to £1,200 depending on driver profile, mileage, and security specification — broadly comparable to or slightly higher than the equivalent diesel Defender.
Real-world figures from completed UK builds typically fall in the range of 18 to 22 mpg on a mixed run, 22 to 25 mpg steady motorway cruising, and 12 to 15 mpg heavy off-road or towing. These are meaningfully lower than the Puma diesel, but the 6L80's 0.67 sixth gear overdrive keeps motorway rpm around 1,750 at 70 mph with a 3.54 axle and 265/75R16 tyres, which is a major improvement over the factory five-speed's cruise behaviour.
The Defender's chassis, axles, and braking system set the towing limit, not the powertrain. The factory 3,500 kg braked towing capacity is preserved. The LS3's torque curve makes the vehicle significantly more comfortable towing at motorway speeds on gradients than the factory diesel, and the 6L80's adaptive shift strategy maintains appropriate gear selection under sustained load.
The LS3 is a production Chevrolet Performance crate engine shared with the C6 Corvette and fifth-generation Camaro SS. In OEM service it routinely exceeds 200,000 miles. Parts availability through GM and the aftermarket is excellent worldwide, servicing is straightforward, and the engine carries a Chevrolet Performance warranty from new. For a Defender, which spends most of its life below 80% of the LS3's rated output, service life is effectively indefinite with routine maintenance.
Remote technical support is provided for the lifetime of the installation. This covers component identification, installation guidance, wiring queries, and calibration advice. Where specific questions arise during the build, we are reachable by phone and email during UK business hours. Warranty on supplied components follows the original manufacturer's terms — Chevrolet Performance, Holley, Dakota Digital, Lokar, and Hooker all provide their own warranties, which we assist with if claims arise.
This complete LS3 and 6L80 Defender conversion kit is designed to remove uncertainty from complex V8 builds. Every major system is defined, matched, and supplied to work together in a UK Defender chassis, retaining LT230 4×4 function and delivering modern drivability.
