Performance Distributors — Mechanical Advance and Electronic Triggering
A performance distributor for SBC and BBC applications improves on the factory unit in several important ways: tighter tolerances in the distributor body and gear reduce timing scatter; recurved or adjustable mechanical advance mechanisms allow the advance curve to be tailored to the specific engine combination; and high-quality caps and rotors with large contact areas reduce the resistance losses that can affect spark energy in the factory ignition system.
Electronic ignition conversion distributors retain the external appearance and mounting of a traditional distributor while replacing the points-style breaker assembly with an electronic pickup — delivering the maintenance-free operation and consistent triggering of a modern system with the installation simplicity of a traditional distributor swap. For classic vehicle builds that need to look period-correct under the hood, an electronic conversion distributor is the ideal solution.
Distributor Caps and Rotors — The Consumable Spark Path
Distributor caps and rotors are wear items that should be replaced at regular service intervals — typically every 30,000 to 50,000 kilometres or whenever ignition performance or misfires suggest deterioration. Performance caps with brass or stainless terminals provide lower resistance and better spark transfer than standard OEM caps, and quality rotors with appropriate coatings resist the erosion that occurs from repeated high-voltage discharge through the cap-to-plug circuit.
