What is Haltech and how does it compare to other ECUs

Since 1986, Haltech has been developing engine management systems in Sydney, Australia. What began as solutions for enthusiasts has grown into a comprehensive platform trusted by professional motorsport teams worldwide. The current Haltech range spans entry-level wire-in ECUs through to fully integrated vehicle control units with built-in power distribution, wideband control and data logging.

From a practical perspective, Haltech products stand out for their combination of capability and accessibility. The NSP and ESP software packages are designed to be learnable without a motorsport engineering degree, while still offering the depth required for serious calibration work. The hardware is robust, waterproof where appropriate, and designed for the heat, vibration and electrical noise found in real engine bays.

The Haltech ecosystem extends beyond standalone ECUs. Digital dashes, keypads, power distribution modules, CAN-based sensors and pre-terminated engine harnesses all communicate over a common CAN network. This means a Nexus R5 can control the engine while simultaneously powering accessories through PD16 modules, displaying data on an iC-7 dash and logging everything for post-session analysis.

Why UK builders choose Haltech

  • Proven reliability across drag racing, drifting, time attack and endurance competition
  • Software that balances power with usability for both professional tuners and capable DIYers
  • Comprehensive plug-and-play options for popular platforms including LS, 2JZ, RB, Barra and rotary
  • CAN-based expansion that allows systems to grow as builds evolve
  • Strong UK availability through authorised dealers like Billy' s Speed Shop

Which Haltech ECU is right for your engine

Selecting an ECU involves matching the hardware capabilities to your engine configuration, feature requirements and budget. Haltech structures its range so that each step up adds specific capabilities rather than simply offering more of everything.

Input and output count

The most fundamental consideration is whether the ECU has enough injector and ignition outputs for your engine. A four-cylinder needs four of each for sequential operation. A V8 needs eight. Rotary engines have their own requirements based on configuration.

Beyond the engine itself, consider what auxiliary devices you need to control: boost solenoids, idle air control valves, additional fuel pumps, cooling fans, nitrous solenoids and shift lights all consume outputs. Count everything before selecting an ECU tier.

Drive-by-wire and variable valve timing

Modern engines increasingly use electronic throttle bodies and variable cam timing. If your engine requires either, the ECU must support them. Elite 550 does not support these features. Elite 750 handles single VVT and DBW. Elite 1500 adds dual VVT. Elite 2500 provides dual DBW plus extensive VVT support. The Nexus range handles these features across all models with varying output counts.

Data logging requirements

All Haltech ECUs include some form of data logging, but capacity and sample rates vary significantly. For serious track work where you need to review runs in detail, internal logging capacity and the number of channels recorded at high frequency become important. The Nexus R5 leads here with 150 channels at 1kHz and 512MB of storage.

Power distribution and wiring complexity

If you want to eliminate relays and fuses throughout the vehicle, the Nexus R5 or a combination of Elite ECU plus PD16 modules allows complete electrical control through the management system. This is particularly valuable for race cars where weight saving, reliability and the ability to configure outputs via software are priorities.

Budget and future expansion

The Elite 550 and 750 provide exceptional value for straightforward builds. However, if you anticipate adding features like drive-by-wire, multiple cam control or extensive data logging later, starting with an Elite 1500 or 2500 avoids the cost of replacing the ECU entirely. The Nexus range represents the highest capability but also the highest investment.

Quick selection guide

  • Simple 4-cylinder, basic turbo build:Elite 550 or Elite 750
  • 6-cylinder with VVT, moderate power:Elite 750 or Elite 1500
  • V8 naturally aspirated or turbo:Elite 1500 or Elite 2500
  • LS swap with minimal complexity:Rebel LS kit

All-in-one vehicle control

The R5 eliminates the need for separate relay boards, fuse boxes and wideband controllers by integrating these functions directly. The four 25A outputs can power injectors, coils, fuel pumps and cooling fans. The twelve 8A outputs handle sensors, solenoids and auxiliary devices. This consolidation reduces wiring, weight and potential failure points.

The dual on-board wideband controllers accept both Bosch LSU4.9 and NTK sensors directly, providing accurate air-fuel ratio data without external controllers. This simplifies installation and ensures the ECU has immediate access to closed-loop fuelling data.

Data logging for serious analysis

With 150 channels logging at 1kHz and 512MB of internal storage, the R5 captures extensive data for post-session review. This level of logging allows detailed analysis of engine behaviour, driver inputs and vehicle dynamics throughout a session. The NSP software provides comprehensive tools for reviewing logged data and identifying areas for improvement.

CAN expansion and ecosystem integration

Three independent CAN networks allow the R5 to communicate with multiple subsystems without conflicts. Connect iC-7 dashes, CAN keypads, additional PD16 modules, external wideband sensors, EGT modules and third-party devices simultaneously. The R5 can control up to four PD16 units, providing 64 controlled outputs for complete vehicle electrical management.

Where Nexus R5 fits best
  • Dedicated race cars where wiring simplification and data acquisition are priorities
  • High-power engines with extensive auxiliary requirements
  • Builds requiring dual drive-by-wire throttle bodies
  • Projects where integrated power distribution eliminates traditional fuse and relay panels
  • Vehicles competing in series where detailed data analysis provides competitive advantage

Nexus R3, S3 and S2 ECUs

Below the R5, Haltech offers additional Nexus models that share the same software platform but with varying output counts and feature sets. These ECUs provide access to Nexus capabilities at different price points and for engines with different requirements.

Nexus R3

The R3 delivers much of the R5' s functionality in a more compact package with reduced output count. It suits engines up to 8 cylinders with comprehensive feature support including dual drive-by-wire, advanced boost control and extensive logging.

Nexus S3 and S2

The S-series Nexus models offer progressively reduced specifications for smaller engines and simpler applications. The S3 handles 6-cylinder and smaller applications with good feature depth. The S2 provides an entry point to the Nexus ecosystem for basic 4-cylinder builds.

Elite 550 and 750: Entry-level capability

The Elite 550 is designed for simple 4-cylinder applications without drive-by-wire or variable valve timing. It provides core engine management functions at the lowest price point in the Elite range. The Elite 750 adds DBW support and single VVT control, making it suitable for many modern 4-cylinder and basic 6-cylinder engines.

Both models use the same NSP software as higher-tier ECUs, so calibration knowledge transfers directly if you upgrade later. They include on-board data logging, flex fuel support and CAN communication for Haltech accessories.

Elite 1500: The versatile middle ground

With 8 injector and 8 ignition outputs plus dual VVT support, the Elite 1500 handles most V8 applications and complex 6-cylinder builds. Single drive-by-wire control covers the majority of modern electronic throttle setups. Enhanced data logging and expanded I/O make it suitable for track-focused builds.

The Elite 1500 often represents the best balance of capability and cost for serious road and track builds. It handles LS, RB, 2JZ and similar engines without limitation while remaining more accessible than the 2500 tier.

Elite 2500 and 2500 T: Maximum Elite capability

The Elite 2500 adds dual drive-by-wire control for engines or applications with two throttle bodies, plus additional outputs and enhanced features for complex racing setups. The 2500 T variant extends this further with even more outputs for demanding applications.

For builds requiring the absolute maximum from the Elite platform or planning significant expansion through CAN accessories, the 2500 series provides headroom. It is also the recommended minimum for applications requiring automatic transmission control through the ECU.

Plug-and-Play adaptor kits

Haltech offers over 40 vehicle-specific adaptor harnesses that allow Elite ECUs to connect directly to factory wiring. These plug-and-play kits dramatically simplify installation by eliminating custom wiring. Available applications include various Ford, GM, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen models.

Check the compatibility list for your specific vehicle. Where available, plug-and-play kits offer the fastest path to a running Haltech system while retaining factory gauge function and OBD-II diagnostics.

Terminated engine harness kits

For engine swaps and custom builds, Haltech offers fully terminated harnesses for popular engines including LS (Gen III and Gen IV), 2JZ, RB, Barra, rotary and universal V8 applications. These harnesses include labelled connectors for all engine sensors, injectors and coils, significantly reducing installation time compared to a universal wire-in approach.

Gen III versus Gen IV kit selection

Haltech offers two primary Rebel LS kits: HT-220201 for Gen III engines (LS1, LS6, LQ4, LQ9, etc.) and HT-220204 for Gen IV engines (LS2, LS3, L76, L99, LS7, etc.). Each kit includes appropriate breakout harnesses for the engine generation.

The modular breakout system means you can mix components if needed. Want to add drive-by-wire throttle to a Gen III engine? Simply add the DBW breakout harness. Swapping injector type? Grab the appropriate injector breakout. This flexibility accommodates the reality that many LS swaps involve parts from multiple generations.

Setup wizard and self-learning

The Rebel LS setup wizard asks six key questions: engine variant, camshaft type, throttle body type, MAP sensor type, injector type and coil type. Based on your answers, it builds fuel and ignition maps for your specific combination. After running through the wizard and completing throttle calibration, the engine will start, idle and drive.

Once running, the Rebel LS continuously monitors air-fuel ratio, knock activity and idle quality, making automatic adjustments to improve the calibration over time. The longer the engine runs, the better it tunes itself.

CAN accessory compatibility

Rebel LS includes CAN communication for Haltech accessories. Connect an iC-7 dash for comprehensive engine data display. Add CAN keypads for switching functions. Integrate up to four PD16 power distribution modules to control the entire vehicle's electrical system.

What Rebel LS is not for

Rebel LS is not a plug-and-play solution for factory LS-powered vehicles like Corvettes, Camaros or Silverados. It does not connect to factory vehicle wiring and will not communicate with factory dash, ABS or body control modules. It is designed specifically for engine swaps where you are building a new harness anyway.
